It's been 24 hours with our little guy and it's going pretty well. I'm writing now from the back of a van as we travel 2 1/2 hours to Cam's birth city of Pingdingshan. China changed some policies in the last few years, some for the good, others for worse. This falls in the worse category. We have to drive to the passport office in his city to file the application. Before it was done on our behalf by our agency reps. We just had to send copies of all the needed items. Now it must be done in person for some reason. So we load up in a van with the whole family, an interpreter and a driver.
It's taking 45 minutes just to get out of the Capital City of Zhengzhou. Did I mention it's an average city of 9 million! We just passed a vineyard and there were probably 10 cars on the side of the highway with their trunks open selling wine from the vineyard! Big banners and all, wild. Also just went through a toll way and you keep a card in your car that you hand them, they mark it to say you started here. Instead of just giving you a card from the booth, interesting.
So back from the tangents. Cam slept well. His schedule is usually to eat at 6am. He stirred a little right on time then, but never woke. Finally at 7:30 we had to wake to get going. He ate like a champ. 2 bowls of congee, rice soup for the uninitiated. A hard boiled egg, bread, and part of a donut. We're not getting the bottle right yet, has a drink then shakes his hand no. After breakfast it was back to the registration office to make the adoption final. Now we are not allowed to change our mind by law here in China. I guess some actually have. Then another journey with the whole group to the notary office where they even took a family picture of all of us for their records. We just had a quick 45 minutes to eat some Mac and cheese in the hotel room and saw a few minutes of the OSU game actually. Thought it was really odd a Fox Sports channel was airing an ESPN game! Guess I won't have to worry about covering any riots! Then it off to the van where we are now.
Can't quite figure out the whole drinking wants for Cam yet. He wants water but shakes off the bottle. Tried to drink out of water bottle but can't quite yet. Ingenuity comes through and the bottle cap works! Well that will do it for now. Trying to get the kids to nap and enjoy the country side.
